Specializing in Power Electronics, and Embedded Systems

What we do

We design electronics and make it work. Our core area is power electronics – circuits that process and control the flow of electricity, for example to push power from a solar panel to the power grid or for the controlled drive of a motor. Primarily we work on projects in or around renewable energy and battery energy storage, power networks, industrial systems and scientific and consumer electronics. Within the company we can offer the broad range of skills required to design and realize power electronics products, although we like to apply these to produce other product too.

Over the years we have worked on power converters with power ratings from milliwatts to hundreds of kilowatts and a few volts to many kilovolts, although mains connected industrial equipment predominates. We have experience with Silicon Carbide and other interesting new wide band-gap power devices, although we always aim to use the technology that gives the right performance and cost point for the product.

While power components form the core of most of our products, control and communications systems are also key to achieving high performance in the application. We therefore have considerable expertise in developing embedded systems based around microcontrollers and FPGAs, along with the sensing and instrumentation to get the data in, the software to optimally control the device, and the communications channels to interface with the outside world.

Capabilities

Our key skills are those involved in the development of power electronic converters and embedded systems. At one end of the spectrum this involves designing electrical systems that are mechanically and electrically robust enough to be installed in the field, operate reliably and are compliant with the necessary standards. At a finer scale we design sensitive analogue instrumentation and digital circuitry for data acquisition, microcontrollers for running embedded control software and communications circuitry for speaking to the outside world in a myriad of different ways. Of course the trend of modern electronics is to swap hardware for software wherever possible so we’re also good programmers, both in the low level languages for microcontrollers and FGPAs in embedded systems, but also increasingly in the (industrial) PC, cloud and web languages as more and more of our things join the internet.

The diagram below shows how a typical design progress flows with us and highlights some of the key things we are able to do.

About XEV

XEV Limited was founded in Cambridge, United Kingdom, in 2016 by Tom Logan and Peter Clifton, both formerly of the power electronics research group at Cambridge University Engineering Department. The company was founded as a vehicle to get more of our ideas into products, and to get those products into the hands of more users.

We enjoy a wide variety of engineering experience, and for us this is a passion, rather than simply a vocation. We enjoy the installation and commissioning of machinery, diagnosis and problem solving, and thrive on the challenge of a time-critical deliverable. We find ourselves equally at home in the R&D environment as on a factory floor working hands-on to deliver a project.

Our business aim is to fuel our enthusiasm for electronics, whilst helping our clients to excel - with many of them making the world a better and cleaner place in the process.
